Friday Flyer

  • Had a 90 minute phone interview for a job in Michigan this morning. I think it went very well. I just took my hand-written thank you note to the mailbox (this is a very important piece in the job-hunting process, that I think a lot of people fail to do).
  • Received two more rejections this week from places I applied to, but never interviewed with.
  • It has been raining too much again this week and all of us need some time outside. The sun is shining this morning, so I’m going to mow the lawn and get everybody out into the fresh air.
  • Gas prices shot up 30 cents a gallon earlier this week. It may be time to bring out the magic snowglobe again.
  • Did I see a headline last week about several billion tax dollars being poured into General Motors? I haven’t been paying close attention, but what was the point of putting more of our money into a company that obviously was moving toward declaring bankruptcy?
  • Staying with the topic of GM and Chrysler, weren’t they both talking a few months ago about how they needed our money to prevent bankruptcy because they would never survive bankruptcy? I recall listening to them discuss why the airlines could survive bankruptcy but the auto industry could not, and yet here both companies are declaring bankruptcy. I know I’m greatly over-simplifying this, but why didn’t they move into bankruptcy BEFORE taking billions and billions of our dollars?

Be careful out there …

I am glad your interview went well. You are in my prayers.

“why didn’t they move into bankruptcy BEFORE taking billions and billions of our dollars”

I haven’t figured that one out, yet, either.

I suspect that there are golden parachutes involved, but I can’t say that for certain at this point.

I hope that the job search goes well. And, yes, I agree with you about the thank-you notes. When I was hiring candidates, I scarcely saw them. Granted, I was hiring people at the entry level, but still that means that there are many candidates … it’s best to do something to bring yourself out of the crowd.

(Cookies kind of cross the line, though …)

Wickle – Yes, I have thought that they wanted the money before going bankrupt to make sure their big wigs had their pockets lined. Of course that sounds terribly cynical and I have no proof of that, but ….

So, you think sending baked goods is too much “thanks” for the interview? Hmmmm, I wonder if I can catch the mailman ….. ;)

  3. Ronnica says:

Thank you notes for an interview? Never heard of that, but I’ve had VERY little experience looking for a job outside of minimum wage gigs. In fact, since I interviewed at my current place of employment as a secretary (and it was the only interview that time around), I’ve never had any real professional interviews. I’m hoping to keep it that way!

Someone on the radio was talking about today that the reason why GM and Chrysler needed the money was because they weren’t READY for bankruptcy until now. I hadn’t realized that you had to prepare…

Hi Ronnica – yes, a brief, handwritten thank-you note following a professional interview is a nice touch. Puts your name in front of the interviewer again, shows respect and shows your interest in the position.

Regarding the auto industry …. as Wickle noted, the “preparation” might have been to buy some parachutes.

  4. Back to Michigan!!! We can only hope. Where at?

As to why the Government is doing any of what it is has no answer without bring ing out the tin foil hat of one world order. With the Federal Reserve having printed at least 2 trillion and the Federal Govenrment running up a 2 trillion dollar deficit this year, that is over 50% inflation. If you can, buy now. If you can’t, get canning supplies and seed.

I’m still rooting for the south (Louisiana). I’ll teach you how to eat crawfish and make boudin.

I need to pop in here more often. I like the Flag Counter.

  6. Dominique says:

I am amazed at how many people don’t followup with handwritten thank you notes! I actually got a job about 13 years ago based on the fact that the deciding factor in the tie was that I was the only one that sent said note!

I am so hopeful that a great job is coming for you!

As far as the car situation, I heard a guest on Fox stating that they felt Obama was doing this with the dealerships so that he could force Americans to buy the kind of cars he thinks we should be driving!

My question is what happens to those people who own or purchase a chrysler/gm car? What if this thing still falls apart? We now know the Obama administration doesn’t keep its word and we can no longer depend on chrysler or gm?

    Craziness….

We finally have sunshine today as well. It has been raining for almost a week straight. I decided to make some home-made leek soup and sure enough…it stopped raining! LOL

Have a great weekend my friend!

boudin is a cajun specialty – it’s like a rice dressing stuffed in a sausage casing. I won’t tell you all the ingredients until you try a piece.

  9. wickle says:

Kerry, I’m always very wary of regional foods with mysterious ingredients.

Are you familiar with chitterlings, more often known as “chit’lin’s”?

If you’re offered them … run away.

  10. Hi Kerry – Love my Friday Flier! I cannot believe it took me until Monday to read it. Crazy.

    Love you
