- A two-year technical college in Nelsonville, Ohio received a threat that black students would be killed on February 2, 2010. Some students have permanently withdrawn from the school. The college spokesperson had this to say:
- “Any time that there are young people, you know, there’s going to be tension … Young people will be young people.”
- “Any time that there are young people, you know, there’s going to be tension … Young people will be young people.”
- Hatred will get us nowhere. A person’s young age should not be a reason to excuse this.
- We have returned to a deep-freeze after a rather mild two-weeks here in the UP. Wind chill this morning is -15 degrees.
- Despite our cold air, it looks like Oklahoma and Texas are dealing with much worse winter weather than we are. I hope Larry, Jamison, and Dominique (all Oklahoma bloggers) are safe and secure. This is the second time in just a few weeks that Oklahoma has been hit with ice. Personally, I would rather have three feet of snow than even .25 inches of ice.
- There has been much discussion in the news this week about how many jobs the stimulus has (or has not) created. In December 2008 I wrote a post looking at some proposals from US Cities and how few jobs the money they were requesting would create. All the stimulus talk this week reminds me that I need to follow-up on that post.
- Now that I’ve been back in the workforce for over five months, I see there are a lot of people – even those with jobs – who are very unhappy everyday. I make it a point to make a quick trip through my building each morning and smile and say good morning to those I see. It is quite obvious to me that even such a simple gesture is painful for many people to even have to endure. More on that and other observations later.
I’m off to work. Oh, and in case you don’t work where I do, let me greet you with a cheery Good Morning!

So far, so good in my area. Just a little sleet, with more expected today. Tulsa has been hit fairly hard, I think. I agree, I don’t like the ice and would rather have the snow.
Glad to hear it Larry! When I pulled up the national weather map yesterday and saw that thick swath of pink painted across the middle of the country, I knew that meant ice for you guys again! Hope the weather has moved on from your area now.
Young people will be young people?
I’ve gotten more involved with anti-bullying efforts here in NH, and we hear a lot of that nonsense about bullying … but about murder?
That’s insane.
As for people in the workplace … I know what you mean. Almost everyone hates his/her job, it seems. I’m thankful that you’re among the content, thankful for what you have rather than looking at what you don’t. (Maybe God knew what He was talking about when He discouraged covetousness, huh?)
And, I’m with you on ice. Sharing the prayers that the people there are well.
Hi Wickle! Yes, our society is excusing bad behavior for all kinds of reasons “they’re kids, they’re poor, they’re minorities, they’re rural, they’re inner-city …..”. Isn’t anybody responsible for their behavior anymore?
Having been out of the workforce for 8 years, I was a little surprised (especially in this economy) to find so many unhappy people with jobs! I’m personally not thrilled being away from Hannah now while my husband stays home, but I am so grateful that I found a job that takes care of our needs and at least allows one of us to be home with her and continue her homeschooling. It’s not my ideal, but I am humbled at God’s provision for our family and I am making the best of it and trying to bring Him the honor everyday.
Hi Kerry – Thank for the shout out and the concerns.
I have been in bed for three days so this storm doesn’t really affect me much, except this morning taking the dogs out. It was so icy. I get very nervous on ice as I fell off the third floor several years ago in a storm just like this one. Add to that balance problems from being in a crash and the ice is tricky at best.
So…the pugs and I will stay in in front of the floor heaters, and if I have a little extra energy today, a roaring fire.
It’s really weird being in today because the windows are covered in this textured pattern of ice and I can’t see out. But it is letting light in…
That’s a really nice gesture to go around and say good morning to everyone.
Hi Dominique – I was most worried about you! I’m glad to know you have a fireplace so at least you can be warm if the power is out. You be very careful walking (you should get a pair of those yak trax that fit over the bottom of your shoes for ice traction). So good to hear from you.
Negative 15 is too much for me to think about. I am shivering with a low of 30 something. I am glad that you take the time to be friendly to others. I bet you would be a joy to work with.
Hi Frances – so good to see you! Too cold here to even shiver today. Dogs are very quick on their trips outside! I try to be pleasant to work with, although some people find a smile and a cheery attitude annoying! Can’t please everybody.
Stay warm my southern friend!
Just a question due to curiosity… you wrote in 12/08 about the stimulus. But that stimulus would have been from the Bush admin.
I’ve heard similar comments around where I live, with addition of how bad a piece of public policy that was from the current administration.
But those folks then get mad when I point out that Obama did not take over that office until 1/09. Are politics more important than the jobs? Politics only gets the politicians a paycheck; jobs give everyone else a paycheck.
Sauer Kraut – If you read my piece that I referenced from 12/08, it was about a proposal that US Cities had put together requesting money from the Federal Government. It was about the problem with “shovel-ready” projects not creating jobs that will last. I did not mention Bush or Obama, only the Federal Government.
