Gas Prices and Other Wonders

  • I thought our gas increase to $3.19/gallon was bad. In Bolivia they ended gas subsidies and their price went from (in US dollars) $1.97 to $3.42 in an instant. There is of course considerable protest and unhappiness over this spike.
  • Oil prices hit $91/barrel this week. Oil speculators of course share some of the burden for bringing us these high prices, but China also contributes to the pain at the pump. China is addicted to oil, and OPEC and speculators and oil companies are making big money off this addiction.
  • The United States’ demand for gasoline has declined four years in a row, and experts believe that even when the economy recovers that our gas addiction will never return to previous levels. (Detroit Free Press)
  • Getting a new office at work, but losing my window. After a year all alone at one end of the building, it will be good to not be isolated.
  • I drive a Saturn Vue – a vehicle I like very much, but will never be able to buy again because GM eliminated Saturn (the best cars they made in my opinion). There’s no Saturn dealers left in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, so we have been taking it to the local GM dealership for service. Recently we took it in to order a new pump for the windshield washer fluid (very important in winter), but they informed us they can’t do the work and we’ll have to go to Green Bay, Wisconsin to a Saturn authorized provider! It’s always something.

Make it a good day.

What a mess Kerry. I just bought a 2011 Honda Element 2 weeks ago. The gas mileage is not as good as my Honda Accord but I’m hoping it won’t be too bad. Hopefully when it’s broke in it’ll do better. So, I have a Basset Hauling Vehicle now! It was very badly needed as my Accord was 13 years old. I think I’m going to enjoy this vehicle because it’s just practical right now.

    Good luck with the Saturn!
