Norfolk Eagles

A few weeks ago I encouraged you to check out the eagle cam at Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Virginia. Over the weeks, we’ve watched the three eggs hatch and the babies grow. Yesterday the mother eagle was killed when she was hit by a plane – she had fed the babies early yesterday morning and was returning to the nest with a fish when she was struck.

The father eagle finally returned to the nest last night about 7pm and brought food to the babies. It is another month before they even learn to fly, and after that they still need to have food supplied for them.

A short time ago, the father returned again with food. A moderator of the discussion noted:

MVK:I am not here to answer questions right now but wanted to post that Dad has brought in a fish at 6:40 a.m. EDST. He did not start feeding immediately but waited, as if expected the female to return and feed. He has now started feeding.

The mother eagle was 15 years old and brought 20 new eagles into the world. While a normal part of life on this planet, the loss of this “mom” has been very sad for those who have been watching her so carefully tend to her babies. Last weekend many watched her cover them and ride out some wild storms on the nest. More storms moving into Norfolk in the next 24-36 hours, and many wonder if the father eagle will protect them that way.
