I pulled up Yahoo! this evening and saw a picture in their news scroll that looked like someone I knew, so I clicked on it and saw the following video from Grand Rapids, Michigan (my former home and the best big city in the State of Michigan). Grand Rapids was listed as one of the top ten dying cities in the country earlier this year, and the city took that personally and created this video. Roger Ebert called this the best music video ever made.
The bridge near the end is the bridge I use to walk across every day to and from work, but the really cool part is near the beginning – the second man with a guitar (wearing a suit and tie) is Wood-TV8 Chief Meteorologist, Bill Steffen. Bill has been a meteorologist in Grand Rapids for over 35 years, and is one of the smartest and finest people I’ve ever met. We don’t get to watch him on TV here in the UP, but we follow his weather blog and catch his forecasts online.
Watch this video. I love the determination and creativity of the people of Grand Rapids, and the people of the State of Michigan to not just survive these hard times, but to come out better and stronger than ever before!
Come to Michigan!

What a treat! I loved it!! Hats off to Grand Rapids – I’ve only been there once (many moons ago for a Mom’s in Touch gathering) but I remember being impressed at what a nice place it is. Thanks for brightening my day
Hi Susan – I spent a lot of years living and working in Grand Rapids, and also grew up not far from there. It remains the only big city I would consider living in. What a great response to being given the “dying city” label! Grand Rapids and Michigan are great places!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Have a great day!
That was fabulous! Thanks for sharing. It’s so good to see positive attitudes in this depressing state we seem to be in.
Hi Cindy – I’m glad you enjoyed it! I enjoyed living in Grand Rapids, and this video really demonstrates the heart and determination of that city.
And I just realized, by “state” I’m not talking about Michigan state. I’m talking about the state of the economy.
I thought that’s what you meant since you’re in Texas!
Yes, I am in Texas! Where all the heat is! 99 degrees tomorrow in South Houston!
99! Wow, we’re still dealing with windchill up here, and have yet to hit 70 this spring.
