The Thursday Three
Welcome to a new feature here at OneMom, called The Thursday Three. Each Thursday I’m going to pose three questions to you – some will be fun, some will be more thought-provoking and challenging.
- What do you usually have for breakfast?
- What pets did you have as a kid?
- What pets do you/your kids have now?
OneMom

1. Yogurt
2. Pierre the french poodle, about 30 guinea pigs, a goose named uncle charlie, a hen named henny mary penny, a pigeon named drexel, 2 rats, a few gerbils, lots of fish, turtles, rabbits, and a parakeet.
3. Chaps and Emma the bassetabulous basset hounds and the loves of my life.
I really enjoy your new thursday three.
Cat, Chaps and Emma
Hi Cat – goodness gracious! Those aren’t pets, that’s a version of Marlin Perkins Wild Kingdom!
OK, here are my answers:
1. Cinnamon Pop Tart or a Peanut Butter Bagel
2. Lovable the Basset Hound, Mr. Boo the cat, Agnes, Pooh, and Henry the hamsters, Marshmellow the rabbit, and Lassie the Collie (of course), Butterscotch the cat.
3. Sophie the Basset Hound, Nell the Sussex Spaniel, and LuLu the Cat. (oops, forgot about Tucker the Tired Turtle)
1. eggs, toast, coffee
2. an assortment of cats, dogs, and rabbits
3. two rabbits (Scarlett, a Dutch; Mischa, a Polish), two parakeets (Skye, who is blue; Peep, who is yellow), a turtle (named Squirtle), and a family of stray cats that finds food and shelter on our deck (Panda, a black and white male – recently trapped, neutered and released; Lily, a female – and pregnant – tiger; and two kittens, Butterball and Fluffy.)

1. Cereal, easily 4-5 days per week. What kind is widely variable, from Kashi Go Lean, oatmeal, and Silver Palate Toasted Oats to things I won’t admit to eating because they aren’t exactly health food …
2. Dogs. At different times: a German shepherd named General, then a golden lab named Sandy, a mixed spaniel named Uhura, and an almost-full-blood cocker spaniel named Snickers.
3. We have none now, and my wife likes it that way. There is some discussion about goldfish for my 13-year-old, and we’re getting some egg hens in the spring.
There is also some talk about about a rabbit hutch, but that’s not likely.

Oh boy, oh boy!
1. Old fashioned Oats at least 4 to 5 days a week. Not because I want to but because I should. Eggs, bacon and toast on the weekends.
2. Beagles galore! One black and brown basset hound named Sylvester. A cat that my sister named Purple. A horse named Daisy and a horse named Merango. Numerous ducks and chickens but they weren’t really pets. We ate their eggs then eventually ate them. Ha! A cow and Guinnea pigs.
3. I’m sad to report that we just lost Taz the cat a few months ago. He hadn’t eaten for a while and when I took him to the vet they detected that his liver was enlarged. The doc said it was probably cancer and there was nothing they could do unless I wanted to take him to a specialist. He was 11 years old and very thin so I made the decision to put him to sleep. But we still have 4 very live bassets! Jethro, Rugby, Ozzie and Harriet.
Hi Cindy – I’m sorry to hear about Taz.
Our LuLu Cat just jumped up in my lap and is staring at me … it’s either her “my food bowl is empty” look or her “I need some water” look.
Glad to hear the hounds are well and happy.
Beagles, eh? Sylvester! What a great name for a Basset. Purple is an interesting name for a cat … I assume it wasn’t the color of the cat?
I didn’t think I’d miss Taz that much cuz I’m not a cat person, but I do miss him. We inherited him when a friend of mine couldn’t take care of him anymore. And we won’t get another cat. But he was loved and well taken care of.
Back in the day, before we knew it was wrong, my Mom and Dad were back yard breeders. They usually gave the beagles away and never had a problem getting rid of them because they bred our female with a male next door that was a hunting beagle. So the sire’s owner used to get a lot of them from us for himself and his friends who used to hunt. We never overbred because our animals were not confined so they had the run of the land and only lived to be around 6 years old. They’d run off and we never knew what happened, but one day, they didn’t come back. Now I realize that they were probably attacked by coyote’s cuz it was country in the area back then. Isn’t it weird how things change? I won’t back yard breed ever again and I would NEVER let my animals out of a fenced in area unless on a leash and in my sight.
And no, the cat wasn’t purple. I always thought that was a strange name and my sister never explained why she named the cat that. It was Calico.
Give LuLu a kitty kiss in memory of Taz.
