I knew however that we would want to be able to watch movies or other programming from time to time and went looking for alternatives to cable and found Roku. Sometime I’ll review the Roku and how great it works, but for now I want to talk about an old show from the 1960s.

I was in kindergarten when the five passengers and two crew members of the SS Minnow set sail for a three hour tour that ended in the seven people being shipwrecked. Of course it was just a silly TV show called Gilligan’s Island – a series that lasted for three years – and thanks to Roku, my 11 year old daughter is discovering the fun of Gilligan’s Island.

When we first streamed the season one episodes (in black and white), she enjoyed the goofiness and messes that Gilligan and the castaways would get into. We recently started season two (in color), she immediately said “oh good – I’m glad it’s not in gray anymore”. She also noticed that finally the Professor and Mary Ann were named in the song instead of just being “and the rest”.

It’s fun to watch Gilligan’s Island with her and enjoy it from her perspective. It certainly represents a simpler time in our country when shows didn’t have to be vulgar or obscene.
