Facebook Stock

Undoubtedly you have heard that Facebook has filed to offer public stock options in their company, and that a few people are in line to become insanely rich. Most regular people won’t have the means to buy Facebook stock in the initial public offering, as that will be reserved for those who are already very rich.

I don’t “get” Facebook, so I’m not weeping about not being able to buy their stock in the IPO. For businesses, I sort of “get” Facebook as an advertising medium announcing events, specials and other news, but for individuals, I just don’t get it.

I was on Facebook briefly, but I was requested to acknowledge total strangers as my “friends”, and even from those I sort of knew, all I received was poker challenges, and requests to help them add virtual animals to their virtual farm. A group of teenagers recently told me that Facebook is “an old stupid dinosaur” – you don’t suppose Mark Zuckerberg knows that Facebook can only hold on so much longer before going the way of “MySpace”, so he’s taking it public to bring in as much cash as possible? I know, I’m being cynical, but how long will it be before the use of Facebook begins to decline?

How much longer before the Facebook bubble bursts? I won’t be in line to stock up on Facebook stock when it’s offered. How about you?

Friday Flyer

  • I like to whistle. My grandmother use to tell me “whistling girls and clucking hens soon will come to no good end” – whatever that meant.
  • Last night Hannah was coloring and whistling. She’s been whistling since she was 2 years old. Three weeks after her 2nd birthday she was sitting and playing with wrapping paper and ribbons on Christmas, and taught herself to whistle.
  • I remember being in a grocery store when she was a toddler and she was whistling … a boy about 10 went running to his mom: “Mom, that’s not fair that little baby can whistle and I can’t!”.
  • I’m whistler’s mother.
Make it a good Friday – whistle while you work.

The Thursday Three

  • Who will win the Super Bowl – Giants or Patriots?
  • So, did you see your shadow today?
  • When’s the last time you laughed uncontrollably – laughed until you cried?

(If you could use a little good news today, read this story about a rescue dog and a very sick little boy).

Friday Flyer

  • In yesterday’s “Thursday Three”, I asked my readers if they were capitalists or populists, but no one identified as either.
  • Capitalism (as defined by Merriam-Webster’s Learners Dictionary): a way of organizing an economy so that the things that are used to make and transport products (such as land, oil, factories, ships, etc.) are owned by individual people and companies rather than by the government .
  • Populism1. the principles and doctrines of any political party asserting that it represents the rank and file of the people.
    2. the principles and doctrines of a late 19th-century American party, especially its support of agrarian (agriculture/rural) interests and a silver coinage.
  • We picked up a treadmill from Craig’s List recently, and every time I use it, LuLu sits behind it and tries to put her paws on it. Silly cat.
  • I am ready for Spring. Even though we haven’t had huge amounts of snow so far this winter, it has been really cold and I’m ready to be warm.

Enjoy your Friday.

The Thursday Three

  • Do you think that banning toys in kids “happy meals” or increasing fruits and vegetables in school lunches will have any role in reducing child obesity?
  • Are you a capitalist or a populist?
  • Which magazines do you subscribe to?
